Well hello,
Welcome new folks, feel free to poke around at previous installments to find out what you missed (not a whole lot, only been up and running for a few months).
I have some new music to share. I’ve got a new single up on all streaming services like Spotify called SIXTY. I’m always searching for new writing/working music, but I also wanted something that was viable for meditation. I decided to write a song that is sixty minutes at sixty beats per minute, which is in the territory of a resting heart rate. Making it sixty minutes gives me a set block of time to focus. Often times I’d have my Spotify playlist on shuffle and get hit with five loud commercials in a row, distracting me from whatever I was doing for a moment. So I made this. I think I’ll be making more.
THE RED SKY Updates
After bugging my wife to read the opening prologue, I think I am finally where I want to be and have started in on the first chapter. Right now it’s just broad strokes, I tend to write minimally the first time around, and then go back pass after pass adding in small details - mostly sensory (smells, feels, sounds, etc.). I’m also still hashing out the mid-section outline. I’ve found that my beginning and endings come first, which is important because not knowing your ending is not a great way to start writing.
More updates to THE RED SKY playlist on Spotify. New additions include The 1975, Field Music, Human Don’t Be Angry, Penka Kouneva, and The Necks.
Stuff I’m Into
Books - currently reading Leviathan Wakes by James S.A. Corey (the first book in The Expanse series, and the TV show). I have been watching The Expanse since the beginning, but I’m just now catching up on the books, the time I’ve ever gone in that order (usually the book comes first). While digging around, I discovered that the book (written from the view of alternating protagonists, Miller and Holden) was split chapter-by-chapter between the two writers, Ty Franck and Daniel Abraham. Ty Franck has a blog post explaining how they did it, each taking a POV, writing their chapters, exchanging them for review of each others’ work, and then moving forward. It’s a fascinating way to write a book because it gives you instant feedback and the strengths and weakness of each writer can be addressed immediately.
TV/Movies - Currently watching The Mandalorian (Season 2) on Disney+, Street Food - South America on Netflix, Superstore (Season 6) on Hulu, and Killing Eve (Season 3) on Hulu. Also watched the Trevor Noah stand-up special Man Of All Nations.
Music - What’s Happening EP by Ken Andrews, Away Is Mine by Gord Downie, Hey Clockface by Elvis Costello, Notes On A Conditional Form by The 1975,
What are you watching, reading, listening to at the moment?
Stay safe!
